God Beyond the Familiar Walls
The word of the LORD came expressly unto Ezekiel the priest.
Ezekiel 1:3
Read Ezekiel 1. Focus on verses 1 through 3 and 22 through 28. Sometimes a change of place unsettles more than our routine. The church where we knew everyone is far away. The home where we prayed through difficult years belongs to someone else. We miss a setting so deeply that we begin wondering whether our spiritual life can feel real anywhere new. Ezekiel's opening vision occurs among people displaced from Judah to Babylon. He is a priest, but he is not standing in Jerusalem's temple. He is beside a river in the land of exile when the heavens open and God reveals His glory. The creatures, wheels, brightness, and throne can feel difficult to picture. Rather than making every detail a separate puzzle, notice the vision's movement toward its center. Above the living creatures is a throne, and Ezekiel recognizes the likeness of the glory of the Lord. He falls facedown and hears a voice. God's majesty has not been confined to the place the exiles have lost. Babylon's conquest has not reduced Him to a defeated local deity. He remains sovereign in the land where His people feel least established. This is not an announcement that exile is comfortable or that Jerusalem's temple never mattered. The loss is real. The coming messages will explain why judgment has reached Judah. Yet the first chapter establishes that God can address a displaced person without waiting for familiar conditions to return. For us, a beloved setting can hold precious memories without becoming the boundary of God's presence. We may need to grieve what we no longer have. We may also need to listen where we now stand. Perhaps prayer in a smaller home feels different. Perhaps a changed work schedule has disrupted a cherished routine. Perhaps you are attending a new congregation and have not yet found your place. The unfamiliarity does not mean God has become unavailable. Ezekiel receives a vision appropriate to his prophetic calling. We need not seek a matching experience to take its message seriously. The God he encounters is greater than the circumstances that have narrowed his world. Before trying to recreate everything about your former spiritual routine, make space to meet God in this day's actual surroundings. Open Scripture at the table you have. Pray on the walk available to you. A familiar room can help us remember, but it does not own the voice we are listening for. Put It into Practice Choose a simple place in your current surroundings for prayer and reading. Begin there without requiring it to feel like the place you remember.
Have you confused missing a meaningful place with believing that God is farther away?
Lord of every place, meet me where familiar surroundings are missing. Help me grieve what I have lost without assuming I have lost access to You. Open my attention to Your Word in the life and place I have now. Amen.
