The Cost Missing from the Offer
For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.
Proverbs 5:21
Read Proverbs 5. Focus on verses 3 through 14 and 18 through 23. The most dangerous offer may be the one that makes you feel understood. Someone notices what has gone unnoticed. A private conversation feels easier than the difficult one waiting at home. You tell yourself that being appreciated cannot be wrong, and slowly the attention begins to ask for something in return. Proverbs 5 addresses adultery plainly. The forbidden relationship begins with sweetness and ends in bitterness. The father asks his son to look beyond the appealing introduction and consider the ending, including lost honor, depleted resources, and regret over instruction he would not receive. This chapter does not blame one sex for another person's choices. Although the instruction is addressed to a son and describes a seductive woman, the listener is responsible for where he goes and what he permits. Its warning confronts anyone willing to build intimacy through betrayal. The command to stay far from the door is practical. Certain doors are easier to avoid than to walk back out of. We are not proving strength by keeping an unnecessary private channel open, preserving suggestive messages, or arranging situations in which secrecy can grow. There is also a positive vision here. The chapter encourages a husband to delight in his wife. Faithfulness is more than preventing a scandal. It includes cultivating affection, attention, and joy within the covenant that already deserves them. Neglected intimacy cannot be repaired by rules alone. For someone who has been betrayed, these words may carry pain. Another person's unfaithfulness is not proof that you failed to be interesting, attractive, or attentive enough. The responsibility for betrayal belongs to the person who chose it. Scripture's warnings should never become weapons against the wounded. For someone already entangled, secrecy is not a refuge. God sees the whole road, including the part you have not disclosed. Bringing the truth into the light may be costly, but continuing to hide keeps adding to the cost. Honest repentance can begin with ending the deception and seeking accountable help. Look beyond the feeling an offer creates. Ask who would pay for it if the truth became known. Wisdom cares about the people missing from the private conversation, and about the person you are becoming while you keep it private. Put It into Practice Close an inappropriate private channel, or invest deliberate attention in a neglected commitment. If betrayal is already involved, seek wise, accountable support.
Is any relationship asking you to hide something that a faithful relationship should be able to bear in the light?
Faithful God, protect the commitments entrusted to me. Expose any secrecy I have mistaken for harmless comfort. Give healing to those who have been betrayed and courage to those who need to tell the truth. Amen.
