Why people who claim to be Open-Minded Are Often the Least Tolerant
People who claim to be "open-minded" are often the least tolerant of different choices.
They can't sit quietly and enjoy the ride. They have to point out how you could've taken
the freeway and saved 1.42 seconds. They can't let you choose your route without
commentary.
It's like being in a car with someone who's obsessed with critiquing your route. Even
though you'll both arrive at the same destination, they can't enjoy the journey—they're
too busy being the route police.
Here's what this reveals: people who need to control others are usually out of control themselves. The need to be right about everything reveals a heart that's never been
secure in anything.
Most people who can't let you choose your route are actually lost on their own journey.
Jesus Christ gives us the beauty of choice. Even the choice to make Him Lord and Savior.
Even the choice of which route to take. If it doesn't go against God's design, what's the
big deal?
But some people have appointed themselves as judges of choices that have zero impact
on their lives. They've made themselves the moral police of everyone else's decisions.
When you understand that their need to control you has nothing to do with you and
everything to do with their insecurity, you stop taking their commentary personally.
When you know whose you are, you don't need everyone else to validate your decisions.
What route are you letting someone else's insecurity dictate?
