What Happens When You Put Things Before God
Here's what happens when you build a throne.
You put something on it.
The day I realized all the things I was fixated on, everything changed. I thought I was helping situations that required a huge amount of my thought. Many of them didn't.
I wasn't casting my cares on Him like I should've. I was building thrones for them instead.
Each time I found myself worrying about things as if worrying could fix it—if worrying could fix things, there'd be hardly anyone with any problems.
But here's what people don't tell you about worry: it's not just anxiety. It's architecture.
Every time you worry, you're building a throne. Every time you obsess, you're placing a crown. Every time you can't let go, you're bowing down.
The level of anxiety worry produces in your body is also a result of other unresolved things you haven't chosen to give over to God.
You're running a whole kingdom of worry-thrones.
If you're not careful, you'll make idols out of the things you worry about. It could even be the things you desire. You can find yourself sulking over what you believe you've been unjustly denied.
Someone said worry is nothing but prayerless anxiety.
But I think it's more than that. Worry is prayer to the wrong god.
What does it mean to truly ask God to be the lover of your soul when I sulk and grow impatient? How does that look in God's eyes?
I ask these questions to my heavenly Father because I know He loves me. He knows that as the words come out of my mouth, fragile as I am, I'm nothing apart from Him.
"I am the vine; you are the branches." (John 15:5)
This is why He tells us to meditate on His word. When you're meditating on His word, there's no room for anything else. You remove self and place Him in the position where He's supposed to be.
On the throne.
He is the ruler and has complete authority in every area of your life. But letting go of control is scary.
Here's the beautiful truth: you were never in control in the first place.
The happiest person is the one who realizes they were never in control. When they submit themselves to the one and only true living God, they've unearthed who He really is.
No one comes to a king unless he summons them. Jesus Christ is the King of kings and Lord of lords.
Pride is ugly. Pride says, "I don't deserve this or that." Nothing compares to what Jesus went through.
Putting other things before God—no matter how noble they are or well-meaning—is building thrones in a kingdom that isn't yours.
When we stand before God mentally and emotionally, we are truly seen for who we really are. God is a jealous God, and we should have no other gods before Him.
There's only room for one throne.
What have you been building thrones for that should be at His feet instead?
Ready to tear down the thrones you've been building and bow before the only King who deserves one?
